A NEW SONG.

By C H Spurgeon

“Sing a new song to the Lord!  Let the whole earth sing to the Lord !” (Psalm 96 v1).

“Sing to the Lord a new song, for He has done marvellous things; His right hand and His holy arm have worked salvation for Him”

(Psalm 98 v1).

We read about a new song in Psalm 96 because the Lord was coming, but now we have another new song in Psalm 98 because He has come and conquered.  Our King, Jesus Christ, lived a marvellous life, died a marvellous death, rose by a marvellous resurrection, and ascended marvellously into heaven.  By His divine power He has sent the Holy Spirit to do wonderful works, and by that Holy energy His disciples did marvellous things and astonished the world.  Idols have fallen, superstitions have gone, empires and cruelty have perished.  For this He deserves the highest praise.  His acts have proven His deity, Jesus is Jehovah, and therefore we sing to Him as to the Lord.

Sin, death and Hell fell beneath His glorious victory, and the idols and the failures of humankind have been overthrown and defeated by His hand alone.  The victories of Jesus are wonderful because they are due not to physical but to moral power, that is the energy of goodness, justice and truth.  Jesus never lowers Himself to use human force, rather it was His unmarked perfection that secured Him the real and lasting victory.

Glory be unto the Conqueror, let new songs be sung to His praise.
