OF THE READING OF HOLY SCRIPTURE.
By Thomas a Kempis.
Truth, not eloquence, is to be sought for in Holy Scripture.
Each part of the Scripture is to be read with the same Spirit wherewith it was written.
We should rather search after our spiritual profit in the Scriptures than subtilty of speech. Let the love of pure truth draw thee to read.
Search not who spoke this or that but mark what is spoken. Men pass away but the truth of the Lord remains for ever. God speaks to us in many ways without respect of persons.
Our own curiosity often hinders us in reading of the Scriptures when we examine and discuss that which we should rather accept without more ado.
If you desire to reap profit, read with humility, simplicity and faithfulness.
From: ‘Of the Imitation of Christ’.

THE EDITOR’S LETTER.
My Dear Friends,
Another year of God’s grace and goodness is drawing to a close and we shall once more soon be celebrating the birth of our Saviour.
We are so blessed to have His word available for us to read, but sometimes I wonder if we take the Bible too much for granted and do not read it as often as we should, or read it without taking it to heart. In this edition of ‘The Overcomer’ the articles chosen seek to address this issue and I trust that they will be of blessing, and reawaken in our hearts and minds the desire to study God’s Word and by His grace and strength obey and live by what He teaches us.
May the God of all grace keep and bless you in the year ahead and make His Word to be a daily, living blessing.
Yours in the Saviour’s Name,
Michael Metcalfe.
