ETERNAL LIFE.

By D T Niles

“Now this is eternal life: that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent” (John 17 v3).

Knowing God, which is Eternal life, comes by direct access to God.  The word “know” is used again and again in the Bible in this sense.  Those who know God, says the Book of Daniel, shall be strong and do exploits.  This knowing of God means being friends with God, belonging to Him and believing in Him.

Abraham was the friend of God (2 Chronicles 20 v7).  He believed in Him, therefore God was not ashamed to be called his God (Hebrews 11 v16).  Abraham possessed Eternal Life because of this.  God was called the God of Abraham and this meant that between God and Abraham there existed a relationship which was eternal.

To believe in God and belong to Him as a friend is Eternal Life.  It means knowledge both of God and of the Christ, for no one knows the Father except the Son and those to whom the Son chooses to reveal Him (Matthew 11 v27).

Even while we live on earth we can inherit Eternal Life.  Those who do will enter into an experience which can never be measured.  Life on the earth is within the control of time and is lived from day to day.  But life in fellowship with God is outside the control of time and is always lived in a present awareness of His presence.

Death will end this physical life, but it cannot even touch one’s life with God.

“I am the resurrection and the life.  The one who believes in Me will live, even though they die; and whoever lives by believing in Me will never die” (John 11 v25-26).
