DAY 1

We have noted that the cross is central to the eternal purposes of God and to show that this is the case, we must go back in our thoughts to the time before the universe was created by the power of God. We know that God is eternal, having no beginning and no end. Revelation 1:8 says,

  • I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End," says the Lord, "who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty.

And in Isaiah 43:10,

  • Before Me there was no God formed, nor shall there be after Me.”

We know a little of what was in the mind of God at that time from certain scriptures and it is amazing to find that He was thinking of us and our salvation. 2 Timothy 1:9 says,

  • He has saved us and called us to a holy life - not because of anything we have done but because of his own purpose and grace. This grace was given us in Christ Jesus BEFORE THE BEGINNING OF TIME.

We also have Paul’s words in Titus 1:2

  • In hope of eternal life which God, who cannot lie, promised BEFORE TIME BEGAN.

Quite obviously the plan of salvation was in the heart of God because we read in 1 Peter 1:18-20,

  • You were not redeemed with corruptible things, like silver or gold … but with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot. He indeed was foreordained BEFORE THE FOUNDATION OF THE WORLD, but was manifest in these last times for you.”

Since redemption is available through the blood of the Lamb of God, it seems obvious that His life was going to be laid down. And we know that, indeed, the blood of the Lord Jesus was shed for us when an unknown Roman soldier pierced His side with a spear as His dead body hung upon the cross.

We are severely limited in our understanding of eternity and the mind of the omnipotent, sovereign God of heaven. Our minds are finite and there are many questions that we cannot answer. We have to keep in mind words such as Paul wrote in Romans 11:33-34,

  • Oh, the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are His judgments and His ways past finding out! For who has known the mind of the Lord?”

When we come to the end of our powers of reason, and feel there are mysteries which are beyond us, we bow humbly before our omniscient Heavenly Father and thank Him for what we do understand and worship Him for His greatness.
