8. THE OUTLOOK FROM THE SANCTUARY Ps. 29.

1. The worshippers and the worship.

“Give unto the Lord, O ye sons of the mighty (margin, “sons of God”) . . . Give unto the Lord the glory due unto His Name, Worship the Lord in holy array” (rnargin, “in His glorious sanctuary”) (v1-2).

2. The object of praise.

“The voice of the Lord” (v3).

The Sanctuary is the only place in which we can hear His voice and see its effect in the earth. “He heard the voice of one speaking unto him from off the mercy-seat” (Num. 7 v89).

3. The outlook from the Sanctuary.

a) The voice upon the waters controlling.

“The voice of the Lord is upon the waters” (v3).

b) The voice in irresistible power.

“The voice of the Lord is powerful . . . is full of majesty . . . The voice . . . breaketh the cedars” (v4-5).

c) The voice distributing the Holy Spirit as fire.

“The voice . . . heweth out flames of fire” (v7).

d) The voice shaking all that needs shaking.

“The voice . . . shaketh the wilderness” (v8).

e) The voice commanding stripping.

“The voice . . . strippeth the forests bare” (v9).

4. The theme in the Sanctuary.

“And in His temple every thing saith, Glory” (v9).

The worshippers in the Sanctuary, watching the ways of the Lord in the world, know that the “earth shall be filled with the glory of the Lord”, even as from His temple they look out and see that the breaking, shaking, stripping, all speak of His glorious power.

5. The knowledge of God in the Sanctuary.

a) God at the helm.

“The Lord sat as King at the flood, yea the Lord sitteth as King for ever” (v10).

b) God giving strength and peace to His people.

“The Lord will give strength unto His people, the Lord will bless His people with peace” (v11).

In the Sanctuary the soul is brought to know the sovereignty and omnipotence of God, and looks out with God upon the world, watching Him working all things after the counsel of His own will.
