God is love.

By Sadhu Sundar Singh

God is love and in every living creature He has set this power to love, especially in humankind.  It is therefore only right that the Lover who has given us life, intelligence and love itself should receive His due payment for that love.  His desire is towards all He has created and if this love is not used well or if we do not love Him back with all our heart, soul, mind and strength then that love becomes selfish. Therefore disaster arises for ourselves and for other creatures of God, and so every selfish person, strangely enough, becomes a self-slayer.

Jesus said, "Love your neighbour as yourself”.  Now although in a sense all men are neighbours of one another, yet the reference is especially to those who always live near each other.  It is easier to live at peace with one who is living near you for only a few days even though he is unfriendly.  But in the case of one who is living near you, and day by day is the cause of trouble to you, it is very difficult to be patient with him and to love him as yourself.  When you have conquered in this great struggle it will be easier to love all others as yourself.

When humans with all their heart, mind and soul love God, and their neighbour as themselves, there will be no room for any doubts.  Then in that human will be established the Kingdom of God of which there is never any end.  They, melted and moulded in the fire of love, will be made into the image of the heavenly Father who at the beginning of time made us like Himself.

A Prayer

Dear Master, your varied blessings and gifts have filled my heart to overflowing with gratitude and praise.  But the praise of heart and tongue do not satisfy me until I prove by my deeds that my life is devoted to your service.  Thanks and praise be to you that you have brought me, unworthy though I am, out of death into life and made me to rejoice in your fellowship and love.  I am not sure sometimes of either myself or my deepest needs, but you, O Father, know very well your creation and their needs.  Nor can I love myself as you love me.  To love myself truly is to love with heart and soul, that unlimited and immense love which gave me existence, and that love is you.  You have therefore given me a new heart which will be fixed on one only, on you, who created it.

Master, being seated at your feet is so much better than to sit upon the most amazing throne of earth, for it means to be enthroned forever in the eternal kingdom.  And now, on the altar I offer myself as a sacrifice.  Graciously accept me dear Father, and wherever and however you will, please use me for service.  For you are mine, and I belong to you.  I thank you for making me in your own image and for granting me the right to become your beloved son.  All honour, glory, praise and thanksgiving be given to you for ever and ever.  Amen.
