CALVARY.

By Alan J Greenbank

The cross on which our Saviour died was erected at a place called Calvary, such a sacred spot.  For this was where the eternal Son of the eternal Father tasted death for every human.  This was where the sinless One became sin for us, that we might be made the righteousness of God in Him.  This is where our beloved Saviour was wounded for our transgressions, and bruised for our iniquities.  Truly, every time we consider the events of that saddest of all days, we are coming onto holy ground.  We would gladly take our shoes off our feet if God asked us to.

We can only humble ourselves as we draw near, for we remember that it was not only the hatred of the Jewish authorities or hesitation of Pilate that led to His death.  It was for our sins that He died.  We are no less guilty than the crowd who screamed for His death or the Roman governor who bowed to the wishes of the murderous crowd and tried to appease his conscience by washing his hands in front of them.

In coming to Calvary, we come to the most amazing scene that has ever been witnessed on earth.  It is the focal point at which all Old Testament prophecies find their fulfilment.  But it is also the point from which flow all the blessings of God to humankind.  Without the cross there would be no peace with God, no reconciliation, no forgiveness, no justification, no redemption, no prayer, no heaven and no escape from hell.  The fact that it is the dividing point between the old and new covenants is seen in the rending of the veil at the very moment when God’s Son died for us.

The One who gave life to all living things, hung between earth and heaven and laid down His life.  The immortal God suffered mortality.  It is incomprehensible to our finite minds but we agree with Charles Wesley.

“Tis mystery all!  The immortal dies!  Who can explore His strange design?  In vain the firstborn seraph tries to sound the depths of love divine.  Tis mercy all!  Let earth adore.  Let angel minds enquire no more!”
